You Deserve the Honor!
When Howard called and said they wanted to feature me as
the July ST Achiever, I felt both honored and unworthy. Howard
was persuasive, however, so here I am. Although originally from Woodward, Iowa, I spent most of my growing up years in Rock Island, Illinois. My husband, Roger, and I will be married 40 years this October and between us, we have 5 children -my stepsons,
Jeff and Derrick, and our three - Ryan, Lisa and Reid. We are also blessed with 7 grandchildren.
I had worked for a life insurance company as an accounting assistant for about 10 years, and then took the next 10 off to be home when we had our children. When the last one was in
school, I went to work as a secretary for our local school system, until ST reared its ugly head and forced me to quit a job I loved.
I have been blessed with great support from my family (and friends), however, and ST/Dystonia has been a godsend. Roger and I both love playing trivia, so when we heard of an Iowa group that did monthly games during the fall and winter months, we decided to give it a try, formed a team, and we were all hooked. Thinking it might be a way we could raise some money for ST/Dystonia, we decided to try one ourselves. Our first was held in January, 2003 and netted $1,000 which pleased us, since we live in a small, rural community and weren't sure how it would go over. Our participants spread the word and kept asking us when the next one would be. We tried doing them quarterly, but soon, other neighboring churches/groups were asking us if we minded if they, too, could have one to raise some money for their churches/causes. So now, we support each others and limit ours to one a year, usually held in the fall. Our family and friends have always been willing to help with the work involved, but Roger and I come up with what questions we use. (You'd think we'd both get a lot smarter, wouldn't you, but those "senior moments" are not getting better:)! We have also done special trivias to help raise money towards building a school in Tanzania, and for our youth group mission trips. It has given us great pleasure to do this, and especially to give back to ST/Dystonia for being the great, supportive group that it is.
